What is the Weakest Link in your Security?

What is the Weakest Link in your Security?

In a survey of more than 1,000 employees across the U.S. MediaPro reports that 7 of 10 employees lack the awareness to stop preventable computer security events. The good news is that in the prior year survey MediaPro reported 9 out of 10 lacked that awareness. Although there has been significant improvement, there is still a long way to go. What adds to the concern is nearly 20% of those participating in the survey work in the healthcare industry, an industry that has seen an increasing number of attacks because of the high value of the data it processes.

When it comes to phishing, probably the most common of all cybersecurity threats, the results are cause for some optimism. The study reports a marked increase in the number of respondents that could recognize a phishing email, although there were still 8% that were unable to identify such an email.

Another disconcerting part of the report related to connecting to insecure Wi-Fi networks. It would seem that the allure of social networking and other ways of communicating across the Internet are so strong that the number of respondents that reported connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi increased from 45% the prior year to over 63% in 2017. As Social Media becoming a tool for most businesses, clearly there is a need to educate the workforce about the dangers that could be lurking in these unprotected connections.

The survey found that 20% of employees showed a “lack of awareness” in the use of social networking and what they would be willing to post on their personal accounts. This should be a concern as there has been an increase in HIPAA violations related to social media postings.

Steve Conrad, MediaPro’s founder says that there is “overwhelming data supporting the fact that employees are the weakest link in privacy and security.” This reinforces the value in educating all employees. It also causes one to wonder, maybe online training courses are not enough.
